With increasing assertiveness of women in the society there has been a complementary increase in Male femininity. A large number of men have become increasingly feminine in their outlook towards life. There could be a number of reasons for this. Empathy for women and a understanding for their way of life are the core reasons.
Many men today are more effeminate than earlier, interspersing social norms and Gender Roles. Effeminacy among men is an important and often understated cause of Gender Role Reversal. Male effeminacy is often scoffed upon and subject to ridicule by people who rigidly follow set 'norms' for social behavior. Femininity among men is characterized by long hair up to the shoulder, clean shaven body and an indulging in women accessories and mannerisms. Male femininity is not a recent phenomenon. It has been around for centuries. Yet, feminine men still face discrimination in the society and are ridiculed wrongly for their appearance. Male femininity though common in Westernized countries, is still scorned upon in Conservative and Traditional families as it is viewed as a sign of breaking off of values of the society. A typical feminine Male has long hair, shaven beard, legs and underarms, tinged with female perfume and clothing which are all characteristics of a female.
There have been quite a few incidences where male children were brought up as female by parents. A British kindergartener had his first haircut since his birth last month after ridicule from classmates. In conservative Afghanistan too there has been an instance of femininity induced from parents. But mostly Male femininity is a result of the individual's free wish so the society must not thrust societal values upon them as their free speech and wish is equal to those who follow societal 'norms' and the Gender Role. Another reason for increasing effeminacy among men could be increasing exposure and choices that people earlier did not enjoy. Feminine men are a close knit community and there have been effeminate men who have become celebrities today, achieving a cult like status. There has been much thought on why a large number of Men are feminine but not the other way around. This is because Men today have no inhibitions when it comes to deciding their future compared to women.
They are not bogged down by others and are proud of their new found identity. Male femininity has its roots in ancient Greece and Mesopotamia and has been an increasing phenomenon from the dawn of the 20th century. Men today no longer have an inferiority complex in declaring their status and the society too, to a large extent has embraced feminine men. Economic openings for them have also gone a long way in their integration to the society. There is no particular reason for men becoming feminine. It may vary from individual to individual but mostly an interest in the 'female way of life' is the root cause of Male Femininity. Feminine men as a section cannot be ignored. Their numbers have grown in enormous proportions and they also wield voting powers in most countries. This is paving the way for socio-political interaction with the society and it may not take long to see a feminine man in mainstream politics and decision-making. The entertainment industry has its fair share of feminine men and there are quite a few feminine men who have made it big in Showbiz. As a result there is no point in turning a blind eye to feminine men as they deserve all facilities as much as everybody else. Also, it is only a myth that people only men from the lower strata of the society are feminine. Male femininity does not recognize economic considerations. Many male celebrities are feminine and according to a 2011 study, women prefer men with feminine features to masculine men. In the study many women ranked Steven Tyler, renowned for his feminine looks ahead of Brad Pitt!
